For Rachelle and Carl, fourth generation farmers, it’s all about improving the longevity of the herd.
A typical day on the Beauvide Farm begins at 5:00 am, just as it has for four generations. To say that a strong work ethic has been ingrained deeply is an understatement. Together, along with their three-year-old daughter and Rachelle’s father, they attend to 65 cows and 130 animals in total. They’ve succeeded in improving their milk production and cow conformation with average milk production of around 12,000 kilograms per cow per lactation.

As a completely self-sustaining farm, they grow all of the feed for their cows. As Rachelle puts it, “This way the cows give back in their production and longevity.“ And they’ve found that with proper comfort the cows haven’t been sick as much, which has resulted in better milk production. “That’s something we’re proud of and hope to continue improving upon,“ says Rachelle.
When it comes to the cows’ comfort they’ve gone to great lengths including renovating their entire barn. Cow stalls were rebuilt to provide more space and improved lighting. New bowls with high water flow were also added so cows could drink as much as they wanted when thirsty. It’s paid off. As Rachelle puts it, “The numbers really tell us a lot, we see the cows make more milk and we can keep them much longer.“
